Ja’Marr Chase is regarded by many as the best wideout in the sport. This accolade is the direct result of a triple crown-winning season by the former LSU Tiger. Chase reeled in 127 receptions, cumulating in 1,708 yards and 17 touchdowns. Now that Ja’Marr has shown what he can do with a healthy 17 games, a new question needs to be answered: Can he maintain or even improve on this level of production?
The short answer is yes; the long answer is a lot more complicated. There are a lot of moving pieces that need to align for Chase to be the first repeat triple-crown winner since Don Hutson did it four straight times from 1941 to 1944. The most important factor is his health, and just as importantly, the health of superstar signal caller Joe Burrow. What may surprise many is the gap in production for Chase when Tee Higgins lines up beside him vs. when he doesn’t. Chase just barely eclipsed 100 yards a contest; this number dips to roughly 91 yards a game without Tee Higgins and spikes to 104 yards when Tee Higgins shares the gridiron. Chase greatly benefits from Higgins's presence; when Higgins is on the field, teams are forced to spread out their defense more to accommodate.
As talented as Ja’Marr is, who lines up across from him will have an impact on his production. Last season, Chase faced 10 of PFF’s top 32 cornerbacks in football, 3 of those 10 coming from division rivals. This season, he faces an onslaught; 18 of the top 32 corners will get their shot at slowing him down. I expect Ja’Marr to be more than up for the challenge.
My official prediction is another fantastic season for Ja’Marr Chase: 132 catches for 1684 yards and 19 touchdowns. I’ll guess his best game comes against the Ravens in week 15, a 200-yard, 2+ touchdown performance. I’ll guess his worst game is week 9 against the Bears, a game where the run attack is the focus and Jaylon Johnson and crew make it their mission to limit Ja’Marr Chase’s production.
